Kind of hard to say. You didn't say how you installed the Vista exactly.

I think I'd forget the recovery deal and try to get the clean boot install working. If you have files on the partition that you need then STOP now and get a live linux cd to try to copy the files off to a disk or networked drive.

I read it wrong and answer it wrong too. So get off my case you goober.

If you are trying to install a fresh (clean) XP, download and run DelPart. It will clean the drive.

No - don't use delpart. It will also nuke the hidden partition containing the recovery files for your preinstalled XP. Without it you're at your wit end. Instead, use BartPE to format the partition, reboot & insert the recovery CD.

Xp, what makes you believe there is a hidden partition?

Irish Mary hasn't indicated that it is an OEM machine. Do you know something that I don't?

It's not quite clear to me whether or not irishmary has XP preinstalled.

In any event, PCs sold without any OS preinstalled has no hidden partition. On the other hands, those that do have it. Traditionally OEM system builders put part of the OS in the hidden partition and part on the recovery CD. They both depend on each other for the recovery to work successfully.

OK thanks, Xp. The fact that she didn't indicate that she had an OEM system, had tried to install Vista and went back to XP, made me 'assume' that she probably didn't have a hidden partition. So I recommended DelPart.
