damaged mbr.

My mbr has been overwritten. I was trying to format a new western digital drive usinf EZ Install. This appears to have overwritten my mbr. can I recover it. I cant see how to run f disk. xp doesn't appear to provide an option for a startup disk.

Boot with the XP cd, once booted press R to get to the repair console. then type:
fixboot fixmbr
then type exit and reboot your pc to see if you resotred your MBR

Win 98 floppy can be used for fdisk (fdisk /mbr), but I'd use the Win XP CD and PRESS R (recovery) and the commands: fixboot, fixmbr as stated above, and then REBOOT.
Summary: Thanx for responses, I run 4 hdd's, stripping plus mirroring. Peter desribes the exact problem that Win XP doesn't recognize the MBR as it is handled by the BIOS. How can we make a back up of the MBR?...
Summary: reformat does not change your partitioning. You have to repartition to do that. So it would appear you left something out. Start with what does the bios report. 160gig? good. remove all partition...
