Brian, that problem can be solved if you read the READ ME file in the GTA folder.
It gives you a link to the patch that you need to download to solve that problem. After you download it, just install it and restart your computer and GTA will work perfectly. Also, in your GTA, when you are on foot and press left right and back, is the person's back always turned to you?

nice to mention the readme file, the mentined solution only works for the english version of windows xp.
I have downloaded the file Q306676_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU but I get a setuperror caused by the difference in language between windows and the update file. Maybe I am stupid but can't find an other language version.

Filename: D3d8.dll

Try this:
http://www.fileconnect.net/
There is short article: "DirectX 8.1 bug with AMD patch!"
There you can download file Q321178_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe. But it is only for english version.

http://www.fileconnect.net/download.php?filepath=Windows/XP/Patches/Q321178_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe&language=en

Thanks! It sounds like the file, but when I go to:

http://www.fileconnect.net/download.php?filepath=Windows/XP/Patches/Q321178_WXP_SP1_x86_ENU.exe&language=en

I get the following error message:

Unfortunatly, the site that linked to this files is a bandwidth-stealer... SHAME ON HIM! :)
You will now be redirected to the site that hosts this file.

I also looked for the file on the base site http://www.fileconnect.net/ but cannot locate it.

Update: I found a site that has the .44 files:

http://www.slcentral.com/boards/showthread.php?s=&threadid=2962

Unfortunately GTA3, UnReal, and any other game I try to play on my Via-Athlon-XP promptly crashes.

The link at the end of the article is the link producing the error. Ok anyway I got everyting running by applying the patch mentioned above and running at a couple increments below full hardware acceleration.

Thanks anyway!
