I have googled this and wandered around M$ site but what determines whether your windows directory is C:\Windows or C:\Winnt ? I had assumed that XP Home used Windows and XP Pro used Winnt but that is not the case. This is not an idle enquiry, I do have a good reason for asking but it would be a long post. I am aware that XP ALWAYS gives it's version as Winnt 5.0 etc. so that's no help at all.

windows xp pro uses Windows not Winnt.
computer stats:
Gigabyte 7IXE4 Motherboard
Atapi MARY500 cd-rom
Philips 5232p cd-r/rw
WDC WD400EB-75CPF0 HD
Cypress USB mouse
WK-8000 Keyboard
NVIDIA Geforce fx 5200 Video card

The version of Windows decides which folder name is used.
The \winnt folder is used in Windows NT and 2000 (all versions). The \windows folder in XP and I believe 2003 but I can't say with 100% certainty on 2003 as I haven't looked at one in quite a while and don't have one handy.

In effect echoing Luke - my 2 cents worth...
Generally I've noted that XP-Pro goes in as winnt; XP-Home in as windows...
NT/W2K goes in as winnt (be it Workstation/Server, Pro/Server accordingly); - but if winnt is already in use in the target partition (and it can be...) then it will usually go in as windows, or a variant of winnt/windows.
And of course one can always change it to something one prefers during setup be it NT/W2K/XP etc...

Thanks for the feedback guys, sorry for the delay in responding but A Happy New Year to you all.
