Hello,
I am wanting to Build and sell computers. But don’t understand how the OEM licences work.
I currently have a XP HOME CD(which is used), How do I go about installing it on the built computers. Do I buy extra OEM licences if so where.

Could anyone explain how to go about this?
Including how to make a preinstalled installion stored on a CD, that includes custom Software, Windows and make/model and logo and how to buy Windows licences for theses computers.

I would like to do something like how Hp have done, buy computer comes with restore Disk and bonus software disk. The system has compony logo's and make and model details.

:Remember I am located in Australia.

Thankyou for any help

Michael

Hi Micheal,

If you have plenty of money and think microsoft nneds more, then I guess you buy licenses.

The first place I look for almost everything is eBay. Also try pricewatch.com and streetprices.com, though some sellers ship only to US/Canada you can probably find some who'll ship anywhere.

You have a choice to make Micheal. Do you want to run a legitimate and reputable company where you supply your customers with the goods they have paid for.

Or do you want to run a disreputable company, ripping your customers of leaving them high and dry the moment something goes wrong also leaving yourself open to all sorts of legal claims for piracy and dubious business practises.

If it is the former, you contact Microsoft and ask them, for an OEM licence. They will supply all the details and the facilities to allow you to customise your installations.

If it is the latter, you do as Mechanich2Go suggests and look on Ebay.

This (LINK) will take you to Microsoft Partner Program. Read how volume licensing can help build your business of building and selling computers. Good luck.

Stuart,

I was not suggesting buying illegal stuff on eBay, or anywhere else.

I meant to buy COAs.

Buying or selling COA's without the media (CD's) is illegal according to the supreme court as of spring 2004.

Join the MS OEM system builder program. All kinds of cool stuff can be had and you can be a legit dealer as well.

This statement is classic!

(You have a choice to make Micheal. Do you want to run a legitimate and reputable company)

This is the bottom line! I know people who build lots and lots of computers for people who install bogus software and make lots of money doing it. Lets face it, Software is the major expense. Like stuart said, Do you want to be legal and legit and have a clean consience and make a few dollars or do you want to be illegal and make lots of money because you stole the money from someone else? Its such a tempting dilemma but I myself choose to be legal whether I get rich or not. Money isnt everything. Of course when you tell your customer that you will build them a computer and you tally up the total price of the parts and legal software for it they are going to frown. Then you tell them do they want a legal computer or an illegal computer. If they want a legal one then you are the man if not then send them packing. If you install oem windows on your customers computers they dont get support from microsoft but can expect support from you. Of course that could be a understanding thing between you and them. Well just a few rumbling words from me.

As for ebay, I personally would stay away from ebay. I shop ebay occasionally but there is so much room to get screwed on ebay. You have to be a really sharp shopper to shop ebay. Like most auctions, I dont believe theres that many deals to be had. For software I would go with newegg most likely. Just remmember if you shop for something on pricewatch or anywhere for that matter, If you see very much of a price differance on a part between two companys there is a reason. Sometimes its a later version of the item or some part dont come with it that the other did. In general theres not going to be much of a price differance between the same identical product from place to place if there is there is a reason.

Here's how I do it at my shop. I order a 3 pack from a local supplier. Each has it's own license. You can get a volume license but it's somewhat pricey. Check out Microsoft's OEM builders site. Lots of good stuff there. You have to sign up and supply some info such as the name of your business, it's physical address and a phone number. They have listings of local suppliers in your area. Now Supplier means a authorized by MS dealer of microsoft hardware and software. They in turn supply you the builder with these items.
Be good to your customers, build a great product and back it up.

I may be crazy, but I'm not stupid...

Thankyou for the quick reply.
Of corse I want to do what's right. Most places I have shopped at in Australia only have an OEM but with the CD. I just want a Licence.

I wish to preinstall the computer with legal software, windows and customise the computer details.

I have already joined up to the Microsoft's OEM builder’s site. And so far nothing to do with Australia.

As for what setishock said:

Do they come with cds or are they just Licence, and where can you buy them in Australia?

As like this site does:
http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/index.php?redir=http://www.auspcmarket.com.au/show_product_info.php?code=SO-MIWINXPHOME

They only sell the 1 Licence and cd, and if you when ahead with that you would end up with many cd's. If someone can point me to some supply that can send goods to Australia and sells license without the cd that would be most helpful.

Any more information would be much helpful.

Thankyou for the help so far,

Michael
