CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features

To disable ctfmon.exe do the following:
1. From the start menu select run.
2. Type "msconfig.exe" (without the quotes).
3. Select the startup tab.
4. In the list show uncheck ctfmon.exe.
5. Click on apply.

The next time u boot your system ctfmon will not startup anymore!

Just to point out this will work BUT it will reapear when you launch an Office XP application if the Text Services and Speech applets are enabled in the Control Panel, as Henrfan pointed out above.

To disable these (so this won't reappear on launching Office), go to Add/Remove Programs and double click on Office XP. Select Add or Remove features and click Next. Expand the "Office Shared Features" area as well as "Alternative User Input" under it. Select "Not Available" for Speech, click Update and follow the prompts.

The above steps should solve the problem (if you consider this to be one), rather than treating the symptoms of it.

Well, guess what? I just found this article at Microsoft's website: . It explains the more in depth steps necessary to really remove this system component. I figured removing the Speech portion of Office XP would do it. That's what I get for assuming!

ARGH! It ripped my link out! What the heck? Here it is again! If this doesn't work, search for article Q282599 on Microsoft's Knowledge base. It's easilt found from their main website.

It's been a long time coming, but finally someone made a fix for this CTFMON.exe problem.

It mainly affects users who try to watch DVDs with their decoder cards while CTFMON.exe is in memory. Since Microsoft nor Creative Labs (get your drivers out of beta, wouldja?) nor Sigma Designs would do anything about it, someone else did.

This program is not illegal to use, it simply kills the CTFMON.exe task, removes its useless tracks from your registry (no more MSConfig tweaking) and erases the file from your current path. Visit http://dvdfix.cjb.net/ to download a copy or read the documentation before you try it out.

Tell your friends!

I seen that Office XP was causing my computer to act up a lot. I didn't know what was going on so I uninstalled Office XP and went back to Office 2000. Low and behold, the ctfmon.exe file wasn't removed. It was even cause my Internet Explorer to go really slow. I just realised if you click on all of the features in the Text Services properties, it will disable itself. Tricky little thing to get rid of but now I have my orginal Language Properties settings back :)
