Cryptographic Services won't start

It seems for some things to work, the 'Cryptographic Services' needs to be started. When I go to properties with the startup type as automatic or manual, and press start, it comes up with:
'Could not start the Cryptographic Services service on Local Computer.
Error 2: The system cannot find the file specified.'
What is the problem? I've ran my anti-virus software and it's not that. Please help.

Sounds like something's missing. Go to Start, Run, and type sfc /scannow (space before slash), hit enter, and let it run. Unless you have CAB files on the hard drive, you will need your XP CD in its drive. The purpose of this is to see if any file is missing or corrupt and to let Windows replace it.
