Every so often this appears in my Event Log....

Event Type: Information
Event Source: crypt32
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7

Successful auto update retrieval of third-party root list sequence number from: (Windowsupdate.com)

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

As usual there is no info!

I have manged to find out that....

The Update Root Certificates component automatically updates trusted root-certificate authorities from the Microsoft Update server at regular intervals.

Can anyone tell me what this means - I don't like things auto-updating 'behind my back' as it were

Thanks - Lesley

Try here:

http://www.microsoft.com/technet/treeview/default.asp?url=/technet/prodtechnol/winxppro/maintain/xpmanaged/04_xpcer.asp

You can remove the Update Root Certificates component in the Add/Remove Windows Components section of Add or Remove Programs in the Control Panel.

Your automatic updates are likely enabled through control panel>system. you can disable auto updates thru there..then go into services within admin tools and disable auto updates through there. Ok your way out when done making changes.
I disabled mine too, It dosn't affect auto updating antivirus software. You will hafta remember to update windows yourself tho.
Yhat roots certificate stuff is for more software added to trusted companies like verisign and the like.

Lisa - thanks for that - useful info

blender - thanks - yes - disabling the Auto Update is the first thing I do after Installation - that's why I was wondering about that 'thing'- it does it all on its own!
