OS: Win XP Pro SP1
CPU/Ram: P4, 1.6GHz, 384MB RAM
Comment:

hi,

i'm facing a strange prob on my PC (P4, 1.6GHz, Win XP Pro)

it's running quite low in disk space (c: drive).

when i select all files & folders in c: drive (including the hidden folders and in admin mode), properties show that -

size of files and folders is 2.62 GB

but, on the contrary 'My Computer' shows that out of 4.87 GB only 219 MB is free.

even the disk defragmenter shows a chaotic picture :(

I have run - Disk Cleanup and ScanDisk but they didn't help either.

What shall I do to crete space. ( I need to install SP2 which needs a lot of space)

download a program from webroot called windowwasher.

It will clean all the temp files and .old and .bak files from your machine.

best of luck Frank :

Another thing. It appears that you only have a 5 gig HD. This is quite small by todays standards. I suggest you invest in a larger HD. There are deals around where you can get 120+gbs for less that $100

Your 4.87 GB HD is far too small for Windows XP and all its applications, System Restore, Pagefiles etectra. Unless you replace it with a bigger one you will choke Windows over and over and over again. Running defrag requires 15% free space.

Delete older restore points, and you could even burn whtever files you can onto CDs. Also empty recycle bin / norton protected files. Run the disk defragmenter to avoid fragmentation. And definitely as all suggest go for a larger drive and be regular with your HDD maintenance, making sure it doesnt get choked. It always good to leave atleast 15% free space for the defragger to run.

Before deleting anything, make sure you get a complete error-free scandisk.

As per the earlier replies, get rid if temps; dump trash etc.

I'll spare everybody my opinion of XP. But before you barge into SP2, you may want to peruse some of the several hundred horror stories about SP2 in this forum.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

i think i won't go for SP2 now ;-)
as i tried a lot of tools, but couldn't generate enough space on the drive.

actually i have a 40GB+80GB HDD config. Its just that I had created a partition of 5 GB for XP. (Didn't know it will grow this much)

if i haven't intalled SP2, am I missing something? what good will it do for my machine.

I would suggest that you use Partition Magic to expand your 5GB partition.

Another suggestion would be to start installing new programs (and move old ones) to a different partition. That will slow the growth of the C: partition.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

There's nothing wring with SP2 providing you have a well running system to begin with. Make sure you are free of any spy-ware, viruses etc.

If you have problems to begin with, SP2 wont make them go away, but it will stop new ones from arising.

Apart from the obvious chore of empting your recycle bin I would also empty the TIF and check it's properties to see how much is left, should be about 6 hidden system files.

Sometimes files from the Internet can build up into the sub-cache folders [should only be 4] and you may actually have up to 8 of these folders [with funny names], you can delete them if they are there.

I once [in Win95] had nearly 500 mgs of hidden files in there. Hasn't happened to me in XP but still worth a looksee.

There are a lot of folders named -

$NtUninstallKB823182$

in C:\Windows. What are these folders for? Any Idea?
