I would like to know how to create a slipstreamed Windows XP install disc for my laptop. I don't have a real XP install CD (just a cruddy "restore" disc), but I do have the same folders that you'd find on a real XP install disc on my hard drive (i.e. I386, DOCS, VALUEADD, SUPPORT, DOTNETFX). Is this possible? Thanx.

Yes it is possible. Look at the links below to see a couple of different methods.

Crud. I installed nlite and created a folder containing the folders that I mentioned above, but when I open up nlite, it says that several files (listed below) are missing:

-LAYOUT.INF
-TXTSETUP.SIF
-DRVINDEX.INF
-INTL.INF

It also says "Ident file not detected".

Copy the all of the files from the restore disk.
Do not use the ones already on the hard disk.
It works for me, with my recovery disk.

Yeah, but my restore disc is not the same as a standard XP install disc.

As clive has stated. Just treat the recovery disk the same as a full version. When completed you will still only have a recovery disk but it will include SP3 and any drivers you may also include.

All that means is the recovery disk is only good to re-install on you computer as opposed to a full version that will work on any computer.

Meh, OK. I REALLY wanted to know how to BUILD an XP install disc, so I could do a dual boot setup with '98, but it doesn't sound like I have all of the files that I need. Maybe if I took some of the files from my P4's XP disc...

Why do you think you can't create a dual boot setup, using a recovery disk?

Look here

This claims to create a full xp disk from a recovery disk. Personally, I never got it to work.

Try using the other link I provided. Slipstreaming is a method to combine updates that was originated and authorized by MSoft.

The first time I slipstreamed a CD (win2000) I used that link and all went well.
