CRC errors and system crashes!

My transition to Windows XP has been a disaster. I am constantly gettting CRC checking errors when attempting to install new software into Windows XP. These programs worked fine under WinME. I have reinstalled XP 3 times, but to no avail. I am also getting constant program crashes and stop screens (which reboot my system). Last night, I got a stop screen and on restart, WindowsXP could not be started again because the system folder had been corrupted! I had to start all over again, again. I thought these errors may be related to my RAM, but I have eliminated that possibility by replacing it. Here are my system specs:

AMD Thunderbird 1.4 Ghz 266 FSB (AYHJA -Y)
Asus A7V-133 motherboard
Infineon/Micron 133 Mhz RAM - 512 MB (2 sticks)
Maxtor 60 GB 7200 RPM HD
GeForce 2 GTS 64 MB AGP
Sound Blaster 128 PCI
Windows XP Home Ed. version 2002

Thanks for any help you guys can provide me with.
Mark

First and foremost, is your BIOS up to date? The second biggest offenders are video card drivers and Sound Blaster drivers--are they also up to date (XP compatible)?

I had the same problem (twice). Both times it had to do with memory. The first time it WAS bad RAM. The second time it was a little documented problem with a 512MB memory limitation in Windows 98. The fix? Try installing again with only one stick of RAM installed. XP does not have the memory limitation, so you can always install the second stick later. Even if this works, you will probably have to re-install all of your applications because they will all have corrupted data.

Other possibilities:
Hard drive improperly installed.
Hard drive damaged or bad.
IRQ conflicts.
Cables or cards not correctly seated.

I have the same board, and a similar setup but a slower processor (1.2 gig):(

Go to www.asus.com and follow the links (support) to the AMD forums. Very good source of information - helped me out a lot more than ASUS (lack of) support did. Pay particular attention to anything posted by "Klondikekit". Extremely knowledgeable - I've never gone wrong following his advice.

Good luck.

I also have the A7V motherboard and get constant CRC errors, crashes, reboots, etc. Rumour is the A7V is just plain imcompatible with XP or defective. Hard to believe.
