Crash when installing

I have installed in my PC W98, now i'm trying to update to XP, but everytime that i try to run install, one error occurs. When the XP setup is collecting information, (when it does the first shutdown to the PC, it crashs) saying that i must run CHKDSK /F. I have allready did this several times but continuos to give me the same error. Could anyone give me a hand!!!!!!
