I have a main board with the KT333 chipset, a GeForce 3 Ti 200 DDR 128 vid card. I don't understand why this happens, and only with this game engine. All help is appreciated, thnx!

right click on the AOE2.exe file.

then go to properties. there should be a tab that says compatibility. click on that and then check the box and choose to use win98 compatibility.

i had this problem with superbike 2k1 and 2k2 and this fixed it.

I have tried the compatibilty mode, and it doesn't work for me either.

Sometimes before the crash to desktop I get what looks like very pixalized, EGA type (green, pink, yellow) screen of the game, then bam, back to desktop! Only sometimes.

Need a little more information, such as OS, sound card, memory, etc. My guess is that it is a video card driver issue with DirectDraw. Give us a little more system info and maybe we'll get lucky.

I am running XP Pro with all updates.
My main board is an MSI KT333 ultra ARU.
I have an Athlon XP 1800+ (~1533 GHz)
512 Megs of PC 2100 DDR
Sound Blaster Live! Platinum with latest drivers.
MSI GeForce 3 Ti 200 with 128 DDR on board.
The thing is, it did this all the time, no matter what drivers I had.
