Ok windows works fine and all, but when I get a blue sreen error or my computer freezes and Im forced to either turn the pc off or hit the reboot button. I won't get pass the win xp splash screen, it doesn't start up at all, just stays on the splash screen. Ok so I try hitting f8 and going into safe mode, that works, then I try a system recovery and put the settings for the pervious day. This doesnt work, nothing does. So im forced to repair the installation by doing a repair installation. Which is like installing a fresh version of windows. Anyway now im afraid to reboot my machine. What could be the problem? hardware? ram? what? Thanks for any help. BTW im writing on the same pc I have problems with, just not gonna reboot it. :-)

Could be software or hardware. Have you installed any hardware or software recently. If so. Uninstall the software or hardware. You can use the msconfig utility to elimnate some startup items. You click on Start/Run and type msconfig and click OK and then click on the Startup tab and uncheck anything that you don't feel is necessary. Keep in mind that when you do this. You will have to reboot for the changes to take effect. You may also want to look in your Device Manager for any Conflicts. If you have some you may need to reload the drivers for that particular piece of Hardware, which also requires a Reboot. As long as you can get in under safe mode, you are in good shape for troubleshooting. In safe mode it only load the minimum amout a drivers needed for the computer to function. Since you can get in under safe mode I am leaning to a software issue. Although it could still be a hardware issue. Can you remember the error code or message that you get with the BSOD? If so post back with it. It will help people track down the problem for you.
Good Luck.

If the above suggestions don't work or if you have already tried them then you can try running System File Checker. Click on Start/Run and type sfc /scannow and click OK. You will need to have your XP CD in your CDROM for this to work. If that doesn't work then you will have to start removing peices of hardware until you get a normal bootup. Start with your soundcard and CDROM drives first, try different RAM, video card, etc. Just make sure you power down completely before removing or adding anything back, and be careful of static electricity.

I just wanted to let you know that you could try using the xp software to get into windows itself and passed that one screen. Or you can do a dirty copy of windows xp with you windows cd in the drive and just run it off the cd after rebooting your machine when it says to click any button for cd than click the buttons it will do the rest automatically and get you into there that way.
