OS: xp pro
CPU/Ram: P4 2.4/1g DDR
Comment:

brand new computer built and after installation of windows, everything is moving extreemly slow. i brought up the task manager and noticed that cpu usage is always at 10% when i'm doing nothing and nothing is open, as soon as i open anything it shoots to 100% and nothing responds for about 30 seconds while the window is opening. also, just moving my mouse shoots the usage up to 25%-30%. now i know xp eats up a lot of reasources but with a 2.4 pentium and a gig of ddr memory i shouldn't be having this prob, any suggestions?

This appears to be software related.

Scan for spyware/adware or trojans or you can download Hijackthis and see what's really going on. Goodluck

If you are positive your PC has not established any connection to the internet it could be two things.

1.You may have errors on your HDD.
2.You may have a bad load.

Bad Load = Flaky windows installation???

Did you use a Harddrive diagnostic tool to test or you ran chkdsk..When you test HDD's you use a diagnostic tool..

If you harddrive is error/defect free..then wipe the partitions and reload the PC.

i used this program that some guy refered me too to check the hdd, it came back error free. the thing is, i've installed windows three times already. each time i delete the partition and reformat the hdd. very confusing, could it be a hardware prob, maybe bad m/b or cpu? i hope not cause it all new and not cheep, but i'm not sure what else it could be...

@ this point it could be a some other hardware..memory,mobo or like you said the CPU..

Remember a new component does not mean a defect free component.

Goodluck

Hi

I have read on some other posts having same problems...it turned out they had too much RAM ...just for the heck of it try removing a stick and see if you have any improvement.
It seems that some computers with xp can't handle 1 gig of ram and it actually slows things down to a crawl.
