CPU usage erratic...

Every two weeks or so my computer chops out and then my CDRW drive dissappears. I have to shut down and leave off for 30 seconds then it works fine again. While it is chopping out I looked at my CPU usage and it is jumping between 30% and 100%... WTF! And this is with no programs running! I shut down processes one at a time but computer stays chopping until shutdown. It doesnt do this while im running programs but seems to do it from desktop. IRQ's are set and no PCI slots are sharing. Drivers are certified and current. BIOS is updated. My system specs are: P4 1.7 w/Intel 850 gb mobo 512 rdram (rambus) 60 gig WD caviar Hard Drive Asus Geforce 3 Ti 500 video card Audigy sound card DVD rom (master) CDrw (slave)
