CPU Socket & RAM slots

Hi all. First, I am not sure if I should post this question here on in "Hardware". Apologies if in wrong post. My question is this: Presently I have a P4 1.7GHz processor on an Shuttle AV40 mobo in a socket 478 with 1GB RAM, and am using Windows XP Home as the OS. If I were to install a 2.8 or even a 3.2GHz processor (assuming it will accommodate the 478 socket)would there be any bus or clock, or data transfer, or other type of restrictions on the Shuttle AV40 that might not make it worth upgrading just the proc? Also, a seperate question. The 1GB RAM is 184-pin DIMM. If I did have to upgrade the mobo to accommodate a faster proc, would the memory be transferable or are there specific requirements? Appreciate all the input you guys & dolls can output.

Maybe you should post this in Hardware, but to get more performance out of your PC, have you considered adding more RAM. The RAM you have now, would probably hinder performance on a new MOBO. The newer MOBO's are using a faster front side bus speed. If you put the old ram in a mobo capable of a faster FSB, it will still only run at that speed, hence any new RAM you buy that is faster will only operate at the lower speed of your present RAM. I hope this helped a little. Good Luck.
