CPU running high

Hello, Our computer has been making sounds like is running in overdrive. Upon checking the CPU usage, we are seeing it gets up to 15%, 45%, even 100% at times. I have ran virus checking and that got rid of what was found. I unchecked some programs from starting automatically. How can I find out what is causing our PC to have the CPU to be working so hard? Thanks.

Open up the PC and check for dirt in the cooling fan and fins.
