hey guys,
i really need some help here.
my computer can run a little slow at times and i'm a tech nut whose always trying to keep his electronics running at full tilt.
virus scan, pop up blocker, diskeeper 7.0 you name it i've got it all to keep this thing running sweet. background programs, startup's and services are bare minimum.
here's the problem. i just started to run "sisoftware sandra" as i'm always interested in finding new ways to tweak the computer. she tells me that my cpu is starved and that my memory needs upgrading. well, unfortunetly my motherboard only supports sdram so i'm stuck with that, but i am running 512 (kingston tech) ram so i don't understand why the cpu would be starved. (i do experience crashes and lag from time to time when running big programs) also my computer says it can go up to 1 gb of ram but then it says "in 256 mb chips". i only have 2 slots so how can i possibly upgrade to 1 gb without going over that with 2 512 chips of ram which my computer says to only use 256 mb chips anyway?
this has been killing me for weeks now and i seem to keep hitting a wall when i seek help. i just don't how to upgrade two slots to 1 gb (if that's even necessary) or how not to "starve" my cpu.
thanks to ANYONE who can give me any advice on this issue

Frankly, I take whatever SiSandra reports and recommends with a VERY large grain of salt -- it's very often notoriously inaccurate.

Listen to rac. Get yoy a copy of Tweak-XP. Not only is SisSoft inaccurate, it is just plain bad software, period. Many times doing more harm than good.

thanks guys... that's a relief to hear.
what about the ram issue?
is putting 2 512 mb cards in the two slots over exceeding my ram capabilities or just plain bad for the motherboard?
this is exactly what my motherboard specs says...
--------------
Two Dual Inline Memory Module (DIMM) slots.Supports 1 GB SDRAM
(using 256 Mbit-based DRAM).
---------------
keep in minds guys i only have two slots.how do i get 1 gb of ram?
by the way thanks SOOO much for the help i really appreciate it.

Unless you are doing extreme gaming or other programs that require an inordinate amount of memory 512 is sufficient.

i do video editing which is huge in terms of using resources but my main concern is that even i notice that my CPU seems to be at 100 % more often then i'd care to see.
basically i feel that my CPU "is" being abused (for lack of a better term) and that my memory is not being well used.any suggestions?

Your CPU being @ 100% most of the time is a good sign if your messing around with graphics.
I would be more concerned if the processor had a lot of downtime as this would mean too much time spent accessing the disk for virtual memory instead of doing its job.
The only way to improve this would be to get a faster processor, which would include a new MOBO, memory etc. Even then I would hope my processor was still hitting 100% (just getting the job done quicker).
Good Luck.....
