Sounds like a small utility that issues an idle instruction set to the CPU, to reduce power usage and the temperature. There are several good progs out there that are very effective, and can increase the overall speed, reliability, and useful life of a processor by keeping it cooler (especially on systems that lack sufficient cooling or aren't occasionally cleaned out). Some of these seem to peg the processor at "100% usage".

Any process in caps in Task Manager is bad news, more than likely a virus. Go HERE and run their free scan.

Thinking about that file name, and some file names at that link, seems to indicate that CPUIDLE may be a virus. Many virus names copy names of legitimate files.

Actual Task Manager process is "System Idle Process".

If it's not in caps then just leave it alone, it's a legitimate process and part of Xp.

cpuidle is a process that is 100% LEGIT, do not try to remove it, or shut it down, it is inverted in the terms you see it, were it at full steam it would be at 1 or 2 percent, and if a program isnt running, well, you don't want that. At 99 or 100 it means 0 or 1 % CPU utilization. The idle loops through till the OS calls on it to perform a task. This is a great page with no BS that i have found helpful for many, myself as well. Use it as a reference. The advice you seemed to be getting indicated a lack of familiarity with your topic, though i didnt check the links. Be careful before you remove anything, and qualify your advice, just as you should mine. This is what it does, its IDLEING. Good luck

Oh, Hooner, that comment about services is 100% wrong, I'm not sniping at you, but that is false info. CTHELPER for SoundBlaster for example. The site for the scan was fine, the CPU idle prog was 90's bunk. XP's idle is just fine, even for overclocks, and a person with limited knowlege, enough to ask what cpuidle is. Your answer was worse that the question, so try to look up things more carefully, don't get mad, I mean to help, but bad advice is just that. Good night, east coaster here.

You are quite correct, I did mean to put:

"any *unusual* process in caps"

However I had only just woken up and was simply hoping that no-one noticed, unfortunately you noticed :-(

"and a person with limited knowlege, enough to ask what cpuidle is. Your answer was worse that the question, so try to look up things more carefully, don't get mad, I mean to help"

Dude, please, I've helped more people on this forum than you've had hot dinners, my advice is, 99% of the time, bang on the money. It was a simple typing/brain error (delete as applicable), which I don't appreciate being flamed for, peace.

That may be, and I don't know how well CPUidle works, but the idle process in XP is hardly the most effective. I have a small third-party CPU cooler utility that works with MSI AMD motherboards, and it decreases the temp another 18-20 degrees F.

It is perfectly normal for cpuidle.exe to show an very high usage in the task manager. There is absolutely nothing wrong removing it or shuting it down as it is not part of the operating system. It is not the same thing as the System Idle Process that you see in the Task Manager. If you want to see if CPUidle is effective for you check your temperatures with it running, then turn off CPUidle. If your temperaure stays the same you don't need it. I have had systems it didn't do much for, but I also have a system with an AMD XP (Palomino) chip that it works for so I wouldn't call it bunk at all. And yes, Hooner has indeed helped out many, many people.

thanks for all the help, the only cpuidle i have on my system is as a process in task manager which is showing 100% cpu usage in the performance tab,not a old fan cooling program, the file is " C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC\CPUIDLE\cpuidle.exe" please a dvise if this is a normal process that uses 100% cpu usage because its only come up recently. thanks

It depends upon whether or not you have installed CPUidle on your system. If you have not you may want to look at this page

http://setiathome.ssl.berkeley.edu/virus.html

and make sure you do a full virus scan and make sure your system has all the latest Windows Updates. You also might want to check to see what items are starting up by using MSConfig. I would certainly try to turn it off if you haven't installed anything.
