cpl won't open

The printers & faxes applet won't open and when try to print from a program the print dialog will not open. This started suddenly

did you try a system restore to before the problem?

System restore did its usual thing for me and wouldn't restore. It turned out that a service had stopped and became disabled.

if you ever have trouble with system restore in the future I would suggest shutting it off and then restarting the system restore and testing a restore point.

I would suggest maybe doing an sfc /scannow and letting it fix any files in XP that are defective.
