This is a fresh isntall of windows with al my stuff ocnfigured, and on a new system, so I have no snapshot of before this, recently a folder became corrupt, its an empty folder but its causing probs with defragging, etc, I've ran chkdsk numerous times, nothing, I would hate to have to format and reinstall (no quick way to restore settings... didn't get a chance to make a drive image unfortunately) so how can I go about fixing this? theres nothing in the folder, never was, so?

I assume that you can't delete the folder. Download and run 'unlocker' to try and delete it.

I have unlocker already, already tired it, doesn't work, for some reason I can't get into safe mode and yeah I can't delete it, been trying, I fear I may have to reinstall, just as a thought, I do have a snapshot of the drive with just windows, drivers, and updates, is it possible to backup my current stuff (folders, files, windows folder, etc) restore that image while booting off another drive, then copying over everything and over-writing? That would save me a lot of time and configuration (over 30+ hours, if this was my old sys it'd be easy, I have a image from just a few days ago for that, this one I never got a chance to get an image with all my data)

My advice would be to byte the bullet, do a repartition/format and reinstall. it might very well save you time in the long run.

Comp01, there are many free progs to help you delete the folder.
Move on boot:

any reformatting should only be a LAST option.

Programs like that won't work, I already tried a few, I even booted off another drive on this system and can't delete it and even running chkdsk from another drive doesn't work, I don't know what the prob is, my drives run fine, I scanned for bad sectors, none were found, so I don't know, it always just says "Unable to delete, file or folder is corrupt and unreadable" it makes no sense

I may just format soon, then another 30+ hours of work to get back to where I was (I was finished, I was actually just getting ready to make a drive image in a little while), I think it started when someone tripped my surge protector off earlier, but anyways, I'll try some more things and if all else fails format + reinstall, I do have an image of a clean install of XP with all updates, but nothing else, so still tons of personal files to copy back over, and tons of programs to install and configure...

**Programs like that won't work, I already tried a few** did you try the 2 I listed?
I know as a fact that they DO work.

all what these funny programs do can be done manually by killing explorer.exe from the task manager (close all running programs first). now you can delete your 'stubborn' files/folders manually from a command prompt and then restart explorer.exe. however, in certain cases of corrupted deep folders this method and indeed the above mentioned programs will fail utterly.

MSKB has several solutions to offer (cause 4):

Comp01, I would strongly suggest that you repartition the drive and not just format. It might not be a bad idea to even run DelPart first.

That's a real weird problem.
