When I startup my computer, I get an error message about a bunch of files saying that they are missing or corrupt. It says I need the CD, but this is an OEM computer that came with XP preinstalled. Is there anyway to fix this or do I have to run the system recovery from the manufacturer?

One thing that could cause missing or corrupted files are bad sectors on the HDD. Error Checking Tool can or may be able to fix any file that resides on a bad sector.

Try the system file checker - click on start then run and type in sfc /scannow. Note the space between the c and the /. This will repair and replace any missing or corrupted system files. It may take awhile to run so be patient.

SFC Scannow most of the time do not work on OEM machines. It is one of the many pitfalls of owning computers with Windows preinstalled.

works on mine without any problems. It is directed to the system files on the restore partition.

CNChallenger, it would have been a good idea to list at least some of the missing files. They might not be windows files that are missing.
