Hey out there,
I got a virus, was told to turn off system restore, and then the registry got corrupt. I found out in this tutorial:
http://miscmail.home.mchsi.com/xpfix/xp.htm
That I am stuck.

Is this true? Is there nothing else that I can do? Anything!?

Liz

Meaning that I cannot return to a previous registry because system restore was turned off just recently.

Did you back up your registry recently?

Easiest way out of this would be to perform a 'Repair' re-install of XP.

You wont lose any data and the registry will be repaired.

Bootup from the XP disk (u may need to get into the bios to set your CDRom as the 1st device to boot from - if u don't know how to do that, post back !!) keep selecting 'Install' and u will soon get to 'Repair XP' option (ignore 'Repair Console'). Continue with the install and all should be well in 40 mins !!

Hope this helps.

Ok, I will try doing that. But one thing - I already ran part of the tutorial up to the Recovery Console and did the collowing commands:
copy c:\windows\system32\config\system c:\windows\tmp\system.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\software c:\windows\tmp\software.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\sam c:\windows\tmp\sam.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\security c:\windows\tmp\security.bak
copy c:\windows\system32\config\default c:\windows\tmp\default.bak

delete c:\windows\system32\config\system
delete c:\windows\system32\config\software
delete c:\windows\system32\config\sam
delete c:\windows\system32\config\security
delete c:\windows\system32\config\default

copy c:\windows\repair\system c:\windows\system32\config\system
copy c:\windows\repair\software c:\windows\system32\config\software
copy c:\windows\repair\sam c:\windows\system32\config\sam
copy c:\windows\repair\security c:\windows\system32\config\security
copy c:\windows\repair\default c:\windows\system32\config\default

Should I do the reverse to get the system back to the corrupted state and then do the Repair XP option?

THANK YOU!!!!

Liz

I am trying to get the CD to boot, but everytime it gets to the setup phase it turns around and says random files are missing and then quits out and reboots. I will keep trying though - it sounds promising!

If your having no joy with the repair, then u could always do a 'straight' install of XP over the top.

Again u shouldn't lose any data, but you'll have to re-install all ur progs (those that made entries in the registry for sure).

As the registry was corrupted, u may have had to do that anyway !!

Keep going !!

Hi

I had similar problem and after reinstalling XP in the above way, I found out that I have my Outlook Express working, but all mail data lost ... Any ideas where would I find my old e-mail data?

Thanks
