Hi there! Please I need your help. My Windows XP crashed and I tried almost everything to repair and restore it back but to no avail. I tried using bootcfg /rebuild and it displays "Error: Failed to successfully scan disk for Windows Installations. This error may be caused by a corrupt file system." I also tried fixboot and fixmbr as I thought it could help but still after running bootcfg /rebuild, it displays the same error message. I tried to thoroughly scan the HD for errors by using chkdsk /p and even chkdsk /p /r but still it displays the same error massage after I ran bootcfg /rebuild or bootcfg /scan. I don't think the HD is physically damaged. I think it could not detect my previous windows stallation which I don't know what is the reason. Please if there's anyone who could help me.... Thank you so much in advance...

If you have the XP CD you can use the Repair function to reinstall Windows and keep your programs / files.

1.Boot the computer using the XP CD.

2.At the "Welcome To Setup" screen, you will see the options below:

To setup Windows XP now, press ENTER.

To repair a Windows XP installation using Recovery Console, press R.

To quit Setup without installing Windows XP, press F3.

3.Press ENTER to start the Windows Setup.
DO NOT choose "To repair a Windows XP installation using the Recovery Console, press R", (you do not want to load Recovery Console).

4.Accept the License Agreement and Windows will search for existing Windows installations.

5.Select the XP installation you want to repair from the list and press R to start the repair.

6.Setup will copy the necessary files to the hard drive and reboot. Do not press any key to boot from CD when the message appears. Setup will continue as if it were doing a clean install, but your applications and settings will remain intact.

Yes, I already tried repairing my previous windows installation using the CD. I pressed "ENTER" instead of "R" (which will lead me to the recovery console). When I choosed Enter, it does not lead me to an option wherein I could repair the windows using the CD but instead it asks me where to install my windows. Obviously it could not detect my previous windows installation because it directs me to an option where I could just select the partition where I want to install the new installation of windows. I really don't know why it could not see my previous windows installation. Please help me...please...

Hi Shun2x_e

Are these the steps you took in your attempt to rebuild bootcfg?

1.Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD into the computer (OEM Recovery Disks will probably not work) and reboot.
2.If / When prompted, press any key to boot from CD
3.In the next menu DO press R and enter the recovery console
4.Select the operating system you wish to recover
5.Enter the admin password when prompted and press ENTER
6.Once at the command prompt type "bootcfg /rebuild" to start the rebuild process.
7.The rebuild process will take you through a number of steps
8.Once the tasks are complete type “exit” and reboot.

If so and you used an OEM cd, borrow a retail XP cd from a friend and try again using the retail XP cd. If you did indeed use a retail cd already then, as far as I know, a clean install is about all that is left.

Hang around for a while, though -- someone else might come along with better suggestions. Good Luck and please post back here if / when you do find a solution.

Hi there! I already tried the retail CD but still it could not detect my previous windows installations. I have run many repair tools and the information I got mostly was "invalid patition table" and/or "corrupt file sytem".

If I use the safe mode it hangs on the mup.sys.

I am planning on using third party software to troubleshoot this prob, but is there any available?

I am desperate to revive my windows as I have encrytped folders saved on my hard disk which I know could only be decrypted if am logged in as the admin.

Thank you so much for your advices. Thanks a lot...really.... =)
