I was having problems getting windows XP. Microsoft had me delete some files in active X. Now I am unable to open saved word files.
How can I completly uninstall Word and then re-install?

Save yourself some time by loading the Office CD & selecting "Repair Installation", if that does not work then you can try a complete de-install & re-install, again from the CD, but it normally is quite effective.

Well to uninstall Word - Control Panel>Microsoft Office>Add/Remove
That should launch Office XP Installer
There you get options for Repair/Remove/Uninstall All/Some Components.
That should help
You need Office XP CD for this

There is nothing more exasperating than people who ask for advice & then don't read it. You have just been given the correct advice TWICE, take a deep breath & carry out the advice you have been given.

Lisa22, I addition to the recommendations you received from the others a simple fix which solves many Word problems is to do a search for files and folders and type in "normal.dot" (without the quotes) and delete any normal.dot files you find. A new normal.dot file will be created. Many times the normal.dot file gets corrupted and can cause Word problems.

Hold on now on the normal.dot
If you delete that you lose all your stuff like auto complete, styles, tool bars, macros. Before you delete it, rename the normal.dot Close Word, search for occurrences of normal.dot and rename them all. Restart Word. You now won't have all your cool stuff, but if Word now runs correctly, then the normal.dot template is probably corrupt. Using "organizer" you may be able to copy some customizations to the new normal.dot. If you are not familiar with this, then you will probably have to start again with customizing. I always keep a back-up of my normal.dot off my computer. That way if a reinstall is necessary I have all my customizations and it is also easy to install normal.dot on someone else's computer if necessary.

I agree with Mary. If you delete it, you'll get exactly as Mary wrote. However, there's a workaround to it according to this link http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm

Hope this helps

I really am afraid to start deleting any more files. I was unable to get windows update, and microsoft had me deleting files. I wish I left everything alone to start with.
I think I may just uninstall word. Thanks for everyones help.
