Since yesterday a 2x2 millimeter blue square appears on the center of my desktop on the wallpaper as a last item to be loaded. It darkens when I click on it but nothing happens. Right-clicking does nothing. It has no properties nor any? function. It is just a small picture. What is it? I want to get rid of it. But how?
Any ideas would be helpful.

First see if it does not appear in Windows Safe-Mode.
A Description of the Safe Mode Boot Options in Windows XP

Then if not, proceed with troubleshooting--

to Perform a Clean Boot in Windows XP

To find out what each Startup(or Process) item
does or means, and any recommendation as to if you should close the process:

Do you check for, and remove, Spyware ??
Spyware info.from Microsoft
Virus and Spyware scans work better in Windows Safe-Mode.

Thank you for your responses. The problem is gone. Here is how it was done:
I scanned PC for intruders but found none. I magnified the "thing" on the desktop and found out that it was a nibble from the uppermost blue bar of some program that was loaded, but unresponsive when clicked on. Then I ran the Process Viewer that comes with Norton and there is a "process finder" in the form of a magnifying glass that I dragged over the "thing" on the desktop. The process found was the Kodak Software Updater which I then disabled using Autoruns and restarted. Bingo! Problem solved.
