I purchased a new PC and need to move some programs that I lost the installation disks to. Any ideas how I can do this without copying the entire hard drive to the new PC? The old PC is non functional, lightning strike.

Sorry but for most programs that are "Installed" there is no way to migrate them. The installation process places files and registry entries in lots of places and simply copying the .exe files etc across to the new operating system will not work.
I am often left wondering how people manage to "Lose" the installation disks for programs they have presumedly paid good money for.I used to have a signature but it disappeared and I just couldn't be bothered writing another so please feel free to ingore this.

Most of the time if you do not have the installiton disk it impossible.
Most program have a lot of stuff that is loaded in various places. So it not just coping
the program exe and expecting it to work.Any chance the program are avaiable on the net?
Have you done a google search for them?

Why not just use the old drive in the new machine and piggy-back the new drive? You'll probably have to run a repair to pick up the new hardware, but it might work okay.

To Richard59: The software disks we boxed up by mistake last year and put into storage with other business records that were not necessary to keep in the office. I was asking if this was possible before I started hunting through storage for the boxes.
To tiyogi: These programs are not available on the net. They are purchased programs for automotive software. I work in a garage and these programs allow us to price jobs and see diagrams of engines and other car components.
To Jennifer SUMN: That looks like what I will have to do. The programs cost $250+ each and the shop owner really doesn't want to repurchase them.
Thank you to tiyogi and Jennifer SUMN for your suggestions.
Richard59, don't be so judgemental, not everyone is a software thief.

This is the info Richard59 was working with. Why didn't you say you were to lazy to look for the disks in the first place...

Sorry if I gave that impression It was not my intent. I have the instaldisks of everything I've purchased kept in a safe place in case I need to reinstal. Harddrives inevitably fail so It just doesn't seem particularly organised to be unable to locate the disks when that eventuality happens. By all means relocate the old harddrive into the new machine and do a repair instal of the operating system. I still strongly recommend you put in the effort to locate the original instal disks.

My apologies to Wombat and Richard59.
I was not the only one in the office. I was told they were lost. After I posted here the first time, I made a phone call and was told they were put into storage by mistake.
As for all the computer related items being together, they are, all disks, manuals, paperwork from the initial ordering of the PC and all subsequent software are in a lock box marked COMPUTER.
Again, I thank all for their help and suggestions. In deference to Wombat, I sincerely apologize for any misleading statements, like Richard59 I was going by what I was told/read.
