I reinstalled Windows XP Professional using the setup CD. Is it possible to first copy all the files of the CD to the hard disk and then run the setup? If this can be done, then what is the full path of the file that needs to be double-clicked in order to start the installation of the OS?

Yes it's possible. Just copy the entire \i386 folder from the CD to your hard drive.

To start the install, run the winnt32.exe from within a GUI or type winnt from a command line (if booting from a bootdisk).

If you're going to do this, I highly recommend slipstreaming the latest Service Pack into the install files prior to installing.

I'd suggest that you also copy the Recovery Console to the hard drive. It'll then be presented as one of your boot options (without having to dig out the CD).

Google for the instructions on how to do it.

Please let us know if you found someone's advice to be helpful.
