I need to copy my hard drive on my laptop to a desktop PC. I especially need to copy the registry, to keep Visual Studio settings generated by a previous user. Does anyone know how to do this, is it possible ?

Hi Paul, hello everyone,

I use an adapter that connects a 2.5in notebook IDE hard drive to a 40-pin IDE cable such as this one.

Connect the laptop hard drive as a slave in the desktop and copy everything over to the desktop hard drive.

Best Regards,
Mesich

You can certainly do a backup of your registry - number of ways, but 1 is to run Regedit, choose File/export & save it somewhere handy (it's quite large, mine is about 60Mb on this machine) Then just use/borrow a pen drive to copy it over to your desktop.
I think what you may bew talikng about is the 'Files & settings transfer wizard' (Programs/Accessories/System tools) which you could take a look at, but it's really meant for migrating settings to a new PC rather than just as a backup.

johnr suggestion will help you copy the registry, but I hope you will not try to import it into your desktop registry.

because if you do you will corrupt your desktop.

If I read this right you want to xfer a program to the desktop. This is not something I believe can be accomplished with files and settings transfer wizard or any kind of registry copy.

There is a program I have used going from 98 to w2K to transfer installed programs. Worked great. The product was PC Upgrade Commander by Vcom but it was discontinued.

Perhaps you can find a XP version out there.
