Ctrl Print Screen then Edit/Paste in any graphics programme including Paint.

Works fine on my computer and every computer I have ever tried it on. You are pressing Ctrl and Print Screen together?
You can even paste the screen as an image in MS Word.

I assume you can do ordinary Copy\Paste for other purposes ie it's not the ClipBoard gone wrong?

If you wanted you could download Gadwin Print. I think its free and it will save any or all portions of your desktop as a jpeg. There are also other free screen capture programs too.
