Copy a dvd movie on hhd

I have dvd player dut not a dvd-rw. I want to copy a borrowed movie on my hard disk. I know I cannot copy-paste the contents of the dvd. How can I do this?

You can try Smart Ripper or DvdRip. DvdRip has a feature that will let you split it into 2, 650mb files to burn onto CD to get it off your HD. I'm pretty sure that it is free-ware but if it isn't you could "borrow it from a friend."
