Converting .dat to avi or mpeg

I am looking for a free program that can convert a downloaded movie that came in a .dat file to avi or mpeg format.

Are you refering to the .dat file that 'kazaa' downloads as untill complete then it converts ?????

Just rename the file from .dat to .avi or .mpg and it will work.
