boot to xp. right click my computer, and in the context menu go to manage. expand disk management. on the drive that has me, delete the partition. You can then format it if you like. next, right click my computer. select properties. go to the advanced tab. in the startup and recovery field, go to settings. in the system startup field choose to list operating systems for 0 seconds. otherwise you will have to edit the boot.ini file, which I dont suggest.

Hi, i have the same dual-boot configuration as chalwha, and ive tried Derek said. When i tried to delete the C: partition, the option was greyed out, most likely because it is my boot partition. is there another way to do this?

Because the computer boots from C: you will need to keep these files:
c:\ntldr
c:\ntdetect.com
c:\boot.ini
c:\bootsect.dos

You can then delete everything else on c:

Go to System Properties-Advanced-Startup and Recovery; check that XP is the default OS and uncheck the 'time to display list of operating systems' checkbox.

If anything goes wrong or you want to format your c: have a look at the 'Repairing Dual Boot' link on my page for helpful info about the whole subject

I think my result after a hard work of observation and test with the boot.ini file, in my case which is similar to yours , might help you:
I have a multiboot for Windows 98 and XP on a single hard disk and a single partition. Now take a look at the different boot.ini files I can chose to use, according to the boot menu I Want or not to be displayed (you can edit it in the Workstation system properties, in the panel "Advanced", with "Boot and recovery"):

-Multiboot menu displaying Windows Xp and Windows 98 for 30s, and with Windows XP chosen by default:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP="Microsoft Windows XP Professionnel" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"

-Multiboot menu displaying Windows Xp and Windows 98 for 1s, and with Windows 98 chosen by default:

[Boot Loader]
timeout=1
Default=C:\

[Operating Systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP="Microsoft Windows XP Professionnel" /fastdetect
C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"

-And the last but not the least, no multiboot menu displayed and boot of the PC directly in Windows XP:

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP

[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINXP="Microsoft Windows XP Professionnel" /fastdetect

-So knowing that you just have to delete the parameter line -C:\="Microsoft Windows 98"- to boot directly in Win XP, you can give it a try. But before doing this I also advice you to make a txt copy of the content of your boot.ini , as one never knows if you need a roll back!
