Control Panel, Sys Restore & more not working

Hi, I have some major problems at the moment and would appreciate some advice please.
I'll start from the top and relay all that's happened as there may be some relevance.

I have had problems with Firefox being hijacked (to start with).
Yesterday I downloaded two trial programs and 2 purchased programs. Trial programs worked, 1 purchased program worked, used them all for a while experimenting. The fourth program wouldn't start after installation when I clicked on the icon.

Restarted the computer. Saw the mouse arrow but no desktop icons. Black screen, no sound.
Went to system restore and chose an earlier date. Rebooted, same thing happened but was given 2 messages; one to reinstall sound and the other was that system restore was incomplete due to a serious operating system problem. Tried a couple of more times but with the same result.
Tried 'last best configuration' and safe mode, all with the same result - it actually wouldn't go through safe mode.

I did Ctrl Alt Del and then 'run, desktop' to get the desktop icons back. That worked.

Can get to start, control panel, but any icon i click on won't activate, therefore I can't get to hardware devices to check it out. (is there a way I can get there?)

I've run cc cleaner, Avast, Spyware terminator. Tried downloading other programs to try, but that's a further problem in that the download stalls so can't download. I had a trial version of Stopzilla and it found a rootkill last week which has been deleted.

I can't tell you too much about the system coz I can't get into the devices. I have an AMD Phenom 9600 Quad-Core processor, Nvidia Gforce 8600 GT. 2 gb ram.

My applications seem to be running OK when I click the program in the icon tray, but not when the icon is on the desktop.

I've got some processors in the windows task manager that I'm unsure of:

these aren't all of the processers running, at the moment it's showing 45.

Any ideas that don't involve reformatting the hard drive would be greatly appreciated!!
