Comment:

I have a problem with control panel crashing. I can open control panel fine and see all the items, but when I click any of them the page updates to show details for that one like it should (I am using the catagory view), but then it stops responding. I then have to close it wit ctrl-alt-del as I cannot click any of the options.

Has anyone got any ideas as to why this happens? It has SP1 by the way.

First of all, why haven't you upgraded to SP2? Second of all, You could just reinstall XP over the top of your original installtion. That way you won't lose any data. Then update to SP2. Please!! :-)

Well its not my machine, its someones i'm working on. And I dont like SP2, too many bugs and the like.

Reinstalling over may be an option.

Any other suggestions?

It's the only one I can think of. And SP2 has no bugs as far as I can see! I've seen it running on various machines over the past few months without any probs. But still, it's all about preference isn't it? :-)

Before re-installing - try the system file checker - Click on start then run and type in sfc /scannow. (Note space between the c and the /. This will check and repair all of your system files.
