Hello all, can anyone help with this please?

Does anyone know where XP Pro stores the contents of the My Network Places folder? I figure it must be stored in a file or the registry somewhere as it is available across reboots and is unique to each users pc. The reason i ask is because i have a user who's hard disk failed, i have replaced the HD and now of course the contents of My Network Places is empty. I need to restore this info from the old HD but am having a problem locating it.

Can anyone help?

Many thanks,

Cucumber.

My Network Places will populate itself once the PC is networked.

Yes it will but not until a particular resource is visited a couple of times. If the user cannot remember the locations of the resources they used to use and they have no network drives mapped then they are stuck.

Hmmm ok perhaps i didn't say that correctly. I'll try again...

As i understand it a resource (say a share for example) will not be added to My Network Places until the user has browsed to that resource a couple of times. If a user visits that resource only once then it will not be added to My Network Places right?

Now....if that same user depends upon the contents of My Network Places for a record of commonly used shares, then they have a problem if My Network Places is empty right? If My Network Places is populated with their most commonly used shares then they have no need to map network drives to these locations right?

Was that better?

Yes, but inaccurate. :) If the user wants to access shares frequently, a mapped drive is the best way.

For the original question, the answer is Yes, it is stored, but shortcuts to shared folders are in a directory instead of a file or registry.
Here is its location:
%System_Drive%/Documents and settings/%user%/NetHood/.
By default this folder is hidden. Go on the Tools menu -> Folder options -> Second tab called View -> Check "Show hidden files and folder" and (this might be useless in our case) uncheck "Hide protected operating system file").

Is that answering your question?

By the way, are you sure that this place (Network places) is populating only with frequently visited folder? I was assuming that it holds all shared folder of your network... until I empty it and it does not populate any more.
