I have a connexant softK56 modem, and although the drivers work, I have the irritating background noise of the modem dialing up, even when connected. I have tried turning the speaker voulme for the modem off/on, but there is no change. Could someone tell me if there is an init string that disables the modem noise?

I think that a softmodem does not work in xp (after all its not a modem but a program)
