I am working on a friends pc and can connect to the
internet with Safari, Firefox but no IE7. Using Cat5 on
broadband. I can ping yahoo.com from a command line. I
have downloaded and ran Malwarebyte in normal mode
and windows safe mode with no findings. I have scanned
the pc with AVG 8.0 in windows safe mode with no
findings. When trying to connect with IE, the browser just
returns that it cannot find the webpage, check my
connections.

What is going on?

Check under the IE options, how the browser is connecting to the internet.

Thanks, I ended up choosing Last known good configuration
from startup and got it working. I am now applying latest
patches and setting Firefox as default browser.
