You have to choose "Client for Microsoft Networks" in Network properties as your primary Win98 logon, then you have to set the user name and password the same as your XP sign on.

Forgot to mention you should also put the XP CDROM in the 98 machine and run the network connection wizard.

I have set up a network with 98SE and XP Pro, and it works fine when you use NetBeui,(this is hidden on the XP CD, just read up on it at the microsoft site). When you install XP on the network it will allow you to make a floppy that you can use to set up the 98 machine on the network. It work, but is not the safest way to route via a hub to the internet. The best way then is a router and fixed IP adresses.... and leave out Netbeui

1) you don't need the hub to connect a XP machine to one win98 machine. If you had more, yes.

2) You don't need NEtbeui.

3) I simply used a crossover cable between the two machines, and ran the ICS wizard on both, and it works fine. So you might want to try ditching the hub.

Additionally, make sure you enable Sharing on any folder on your XP that you want to enable access to from the 98 machine, and vice versa.

What does the XP Network Configuration Utility *really* do to a 98 (or other) machine?

Does it upgrade any components such as the TCP/IP protocol to the same "standard" as XP, or is it just a "wizard" for ensuring that File/Print sharing, client for MS Networks is enabled, etc?

All in all, what is the correct method for networking an XP machine to, say, a 98 machine *without* using microsoft's XP Utility, and *without* installing NetBeui?
