Hey,

I'm having issues with 2 background processes that persistently crash. XP usually informs me that either Connection Tray or HiddenFaxWindow(!?) has stopped responding when I shutdown my computer. XP also hangs on 'Saving Your Settings...' more often than not. Unfortunately, I am unsure of how to obtain logs of what my computer is doing, so if you think you can help me please tell me how to provide you with the information you need in your reply.

Thanks in advance!

Hey XpUser4Real,

The event viewer contains a great deal of information. Can you be more specific in telling me what it is you need in order to help me with the problems I'm having?

Thanks for your time.

I presume that all your critical up-dates are done?
Have you scanned for malware, spyware, etc?
Was your OS a clean install or an up-grade?
That info will help us get going, thanks

Also, how long has this been happening? Have you tried a sys restore?

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks

If by critical updates you mean those released for XP by Microsoft then yes, my system is updated. (Including the update which claims to solve the problems I'm having).

I did a reasonably thorough scan for malware/spyware using the following programs: McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Spybot S&D, Ad-aware, Ewido Security Suite, TrojanHunter and TrendMicro CWShredder.

My OS is a factory clean installation of XP Home Edition.

I've had my laptop for almost a year. The shutdown problems I'm having have been occuring possibly for a few months, maybe longer.

I havn't attempted a system restore yet, mainly because I can't remember when the problem first arose, or what changes I may have made to cause it.

Have you spoken to anyone who has solved this WinXP shutdown issue?

A friend of mine just sent me this link, it helps on shutdown, maybe give it a try
Slawdog Smart Shutdown LX
http://www.slawdog.com/products/smartsd/
When you launch it, it sits next to your clock (blue box with a moonon it)
Right click on it and click on show window. Then click on the properties button and put a check in forced execution.
Then apply and close out. Use the shutdown prog instead of the start>sutdown method...see if that helps.

Also maybe try this free on-line scan
On-line Spyware Scan
It tends to find things the others miss...Good Luck

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks
