I have a 56k modem and it only connects up to 48k. Dose any one know how to make it connect up faster than that?
Have you tried looking at the init strings in the user manual of the modem (if available)?

Sounds about normal. You never really get 56k with a 56k modem - that is the theoretical top speed.
Get cable - it rocks!

Top speed (56k) is illegal. The tones associated with the higher speed might affect the phone company's equipment, even though their equipment can handle it.
Be happy, with AOL...my 56k could only connect at 23k....but sometimes i was able to connect at 28k...no matter what access number i called

It all depends on the quality of your phone line and the distance to the phone company. But consider yourself lucky! 48K is pretty good.
