I am trying to connect 6 new Windows XP Professional computers to a Windows NT4 Server without any luck. I am unable to join them to the domain. I can ping the IP Address of the NT server no problem and I have tried switching to NETBIOS Over TCP/IP on the XP Workstations. I have also tried adding entires into the LMHOSTS file on the XP computers to point them to the server, but nothing seems to be working. I even tried installing WINS on the NT 4 Server, but it still never solved the problem. Any help would be great.

rather than guessing at what is wrong, it might be easier if you listed all the steps you did to set up the XP machines to connect to the domain, and we will tell you what you missed or did wrong

I am having the same problem. I am running XP Pro and trying to set up a connection to a WINNT server at my company in San Francisco. The IT group as used TightVNC to access my PC to attempt setting up this connection. Here is how it is set up:
Installed SoftRemoteLT -- set all security settings, inbound/outbound pre-shared keys, etc.
In my DSL Network Connection -- under Networking, changed DNS selection to "use the Following DNS server addresses". Entered IP address. Under Advanced, selected DNS tab and added IP address as well as selected "append these DNS suffixes" and added domain name; under WINS tab selected "enabled LMHOSTS lookup". NOTE: server IPs added to LMHOST file.
I was able to set up Network places to the server locations, but when I try to copy files to the shared folder, I get this error:
"Cannot copy filename: The specified network name is no longer available."This is basically the root of my frustration as I need to copy files back to the servers after working on them. Of course, the hope was that I would be able to connect through SoftRemote. This did not work on it's own. And, my IT group has no experience connecting XP clients to the network servers.
Hope I supplied enough information. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!
