Hi guys...
I have pc and a laptop.the laptop has win-98 and the pc had win ME. I had connected them via NIC cards with a crossover cable and I used to be able to share files just great. Now 2 weeks back I installed win-XP and now I can no longer connect the 2 computers. Can anyone please tell me where in XP I might need to change the settings so that the computers would detect each other and be able to share files...thank you

Click on Start then My Network Places, then on the left hand side click on the VIEW NETWORK CONNECTIONS link. if you did an upgrade than your old network setting should be in there, if not than you will need to make a new one. Click Create a new connection, cancel all the BS about telephone connections. Click next, click the Set up a Small Office or Home Network. Then when it brings up the information for making connection all you need to worry about is TCP/IP, CLIENT FOR MICROSOFT NETWORKS, FILE AND PRINT SHARING, NETBIOS, IPX/SPX. On the TCP/IP make sure you put your own IP address in and proper subnet. Now just make sure that the 98 machine has same settings (except different IP address) and then make sure the networks are named the same. If your PC isn't showing up in Network Neighborhood then just do a Search for Computers and type in its name. Ignore all the crap in XP about making a network settings disk, that just screws up all 98 machines.

I had the same problem. I was able to fix it by installing NETBEUI on both computers. It's on the Windows XP Pro CD.
Good Luck,
Rob
