I will try to help but I will have a lot of questions to know the PC's in your existing Wireless homenetwork, the way it is setup and to configure the laptop and other PCs to 'to coexist in peace and share their assets':-)

What is the Make and Model of the Desktop PC that is connected by wire to the Wireless Router the Operating System name and version that desktop has and the make and model of the Wireless Router? Makes and models of all Brand Name devices will be displayed on the case or body of the device be that PC, Cable/DSL Modem, Router, Printer etc etc.

To know the name of the Network Interface Card or Local Area Network Card, in each PC and the Laptop try this:

RIGHT-click My Computer>Hardware>Device Manager>+ Network adapters and copy the names you can see when the + (plus Sign)turns - (Minus) opening the contents to its Right.

your over working the problem..

Click "start" --> "Control panel"

If you only have a few controls click
"Network and Internet controls"
"Network Connections"

In there you should see the wireless adapter. You Right click on it and see if it's says "Enable"

If it does, click it..

Once your in range you will see a baloon pop up by your clock telling you it sees a wireless connection. Click the balloon and it will pop a window. You should see your wireless router there. Click it.

It may ask you for a key.. Insert it if you supplied one with your router.. If not it will connect right up.

Junk Internet Explorer,
Get Firefox! You'll be happy you did.

.....another serial poster you have had 22 responses here:

Jimminy was wrong to advise starting a new topic as per the RULES:

Hi Hilo, I am not a serial poster I have had several questions regarding my computer, my last post was in regards to my compter not starting, which thanks so much to Jimminy it is up and going now. This thread is for a different problem and when They suggested I start another it made sence to me as it was a different topic. I don't think at any point that its necessary to be rude to anyone that attempts to use these boards when they have a problem, thought that was what its for. But I will think twice about posting for some time thanks.

ladybe,

Good Day:-).
Please try to understand why hiho posted that. hiho's reference to the other message posted earlier, really helped me to get the answers to the Question I posted in response to your Original message in this thread,#137152.html which was remaining not responded to by anyone for nearly one hour when I posted the reply. I had no idea you had posted your System SPECS before! A simple one line answer with the URL, http://www.computing.net/windowsxp/wwwboard/forum/137112.html
and directing me to check the earlier answer would have made me get interested in the problem; instead your unresponsiveness to my query was misconstrued as your turning a cold shoulder and I remained a passive reader of the progress of the troubleshoot without posting my ideas until I read Response #6 from hiho:-)

In any post please post details of the problem device [Brand name , Make Model and Series will suffice in most cases]and the device to which it is attached or the device that controls it so that the readers can visualize the scenario better and as clear a description of the problem, the troubleshoots already done to resolve it etc. If you don't like repeating the same information, please give the EXACT reference to where such data have been poster earlier.

It is my long time observation : Most long threads in Help Forums are the result of inadequate/ambiguous/confusing or wrong information posted by the help seeker that requires series of clarifications! If anyone doubts it, please read the threads with the largest number of responses; you will be convinced:-)
