Im trying to connect to other computer through a router with the following url : «\\123.456.789.123». The «\\» is supposed to give you access to the whole computer if you have the correct login/password. At work, I log with no problem(win 2000 pro). At home, on winxp pro through a router, I just get nothing. Nothing at all. This happens since I bought my router. Is there any way to configure the router in order to do this?

Thanks for you help!

Morning,
Go to the router's manufacturer's website and check for the correct settings for the router.
Also, could try resetting the router to the factory default settings by using the reset button and starting from scratch with the setup.
just a thought,
XDon

At work you are logging in over the Local Area Network. At home you are trying to log in over the Internet. Probably you work computer is not configured to allow that.

Exactly what is the IP Address you are using. Does it start 192.168.xxx.xxx? The IP address you are using is probably a private address on the LAN. These addresses are not accesible via a public network like the internet.

Even if you had the works computers public address is probably still wouldn't work for the reasons stated in paragraph one.

That IP address won't work as Stuart has said. Also do what Don Juan says.

What kind of router is it? Do you have the manual? If so, read it. What kind of connection? DSL? Cable? Haveyou set up your own LAN at home? Your setup should work seamlessly if set up properly.

Try opening IE -- don't worry if a page won't load -- and type 192.168.1.1 just like this -- no http, etc. -- in the address bar. If a page comes up and asks you for a password, type in Admin. Leave the other name -- username? -- blank. That will bring you to the setup page. From there, you're on your own, depending on what the manual or mfr's website says.

The best way is to call the router manufacturer, and explain the problem to them.

if type 192.168.123.254 I can configure my router, but I dont know what to do exactly. I'm wondering if it is obout forwarding rules. I once had to configure the port 80 so that it would lead to 192.168.123.109 in order to have this computer run a website. Its probably the same deal that what I'm trying to do.

I will try to find the manufacturer website in order to find a solution. I'm not sure I'll find out so any help would be welcolm again. Thank you

(excuse my english)

Don't worry about your English. It's better than a lot of native speakers.

I would still try to call your router manufacturer if there's a number in Europe. I would also start all over again by disconnecting everything, and re-connecting (after a reboot) and more or less let it try to configure itself. Maybe the European ISPs are different, but the connection should take care of itself. Try calling your ISP as well. In your TCP/IP properties the IP and DNS should be set to automatic.

OK the website is http://www.gnet.ca/ but I cant find anything about what I'm looking for. I'm beginning to think that maybe I'm not supposed to have this access...

Here's the adresse I want to log to: \\205.236.34.249. When I type this At work, I get a prompt asking for a login and a password. If the login is correct, I get the total access of the drives. When I do the same at home, it takes 30 secondes to finally tell me that the location cant be found. What kind of answer do you get when you try this IP?

If you get the prompt, that means that its a router problem. If so, that probably has something to do with the forwarding rules(the ports)?!? If that is true, I cant figure what port to configure. Also, it is maybe more complicated then a simple port problem. I think I need a network technician(technicien réseau)...

I get to the logon and password screen but of course don't know what to enter there.

Is gnet your ISP or router manufacturer? I would call them both if you can. I still think you should be able to connect your router, CAT5 cables, etc., and get right to the connection. But you may have to go to the router settings -- which the URL you sent -- looks like.

Have you tried turning off the MS firewall? That may well help.
