Hello, I am currently attempting to connect a Gateway laptop to a Sony VAIO desktop with a Kat-5 cord for cable interenet use. I have the Kat-5 cord running from my cable modem (which is connected to the Sony) to the laptop. This does not give me internet connection on the laptop however.
Is there a component I'm missing to connect the two?

The easiest way is to get a 4 port router, connect it to the cable modem with a cat5 cable then connect each computer to one of it's ports with a cat5 cable. You can do it the way you explained by having 2 network cards in your sony, one leading to the laptop, one to the modem. The cable that is in between the two computers has to be a crossover cable. Anytime you run ethernet wire from one computer to another one without a hub or switch in between you need a crossover cable. Then on the sony you have to enable the ics, probably by running the network wizard. A router is a lot easier and safer, most of them have a built in firewall.

google internet connection sharing for the full details of how to setup ics.
just a hint but the cable modem can't be connected to both at the same time since your isp is only giving you one ip address.
