I was trying to connect my laptop to my home amp in order to get better sound quality when playing movies and music... I did this by putting a cable between the two.

However, I can't get no sound through to the amp, just a quite loud buzzing (that isn't affected by volume adjustment). If I connect a cd or mp3 player the same way it works fine. I have also done the same trick with other computers and it worked fine as well...

Suggestions?

Did you plug into the laptop 'line out'?

Plug a headset into the same jack and see if you get sound. So you're not fighting a bad cable.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.
