If the remote system is running WindowsXP you can connect with Remote Desktop. Look in Start > Programs > Accessories > Communication. Click the "Remote Desktop Connection".
Enter the remote computer's IP address or computer name if on a LAN. The port that has to be open on a firewall/router is 3389 but this can be changed if you want. You can then login using a valid username/password on the remote computer.
If they are not running XP (or even if they are and you don't like RD) try RealVNC. Very cool free software. This let's you set whatever password you want and also let's you interact with the remote user's session.
