Your System32 folder may be hidden. Go into Explorer and open the "tools" menu and then open "folder options" pick the "view" tab and check the box that says "show hidden files" and also the box that says "show protected operating system files".

Your system32 folder should show up then. You HAVE to have one or Windows wouldn't be working at all.

If you do not have system32 folder, your windows XP will not be able to boot.

Slippy, As others have stated you have to have a System32 folder and normally it's not a hidden or protected folder. It should be in your C:\Windows or possibly C:\WINNT dorectory (folder). If for some odd reason you still can't find it go to the link below and download & run the "16bit_fix.exe" which should correct your problem.

16 bit_fix

Ok, i went to those links and looked at the solutions, i tried them but none of them seemed to work. I did get comm.drv from driverguide but i still have no system32 folder. p.s. i did put comm.drv in c:\windows\lastgood\system32, but it still didnt work.

lastgood is somesort of spyware that hijacks the system32 folder. I am dealing with the same problem currently, but cant seem to find a good solution either. It also seems to lock you out of the registry when you run regedit with a "C:\Windows\system32\regedit.com
The NTVDM CPU has encountered an illegal instruction"

To find the system32 invisible folder first I redownloaded adaware, The version I had was up to date but was not detecting anything. The fresh version did. Then follow the instructions here http://www.ozzu.com/ftopic46671.html
